Three and a half years ago, Air New Zealand engaged one of the world's top ten design and human-centred research companies to work with a team of Air New Zealanders to reinvent air travel experience.

The project included Air New Zealanders from across all business areas who worked together at a location in central Auckland – now known as 'Hangar 9'.

The team worked on seat and cabin design with seat and industrial designers from outside the airline industry to come up with different cabin configurations that were then tested on groups of actors and included 2-3 hour 'flights' complete with engine noise, full cabin service and children.

The team learned that when it comes to long haul flying, everybody's needs are different and that our new cabin design needed to cater for everyone onboard - some people like to keep to themselves, some like to get together and chat.

The vision was to create an environment where families, business travellers, holidaymakers and even a honeymooning couple could all hop on board and feel right at home, anywhere in the world.

From the design and testing process came world firsts for Economy and Premium Economy but also some significant tweaks for our existing Business Premier product. The results are totally new experiences - where people can talk without disturbing other passengers, where food and drinks come around when passengers are ready, where the kids are entertained, and where everyone gets off the plane feeling relaxed and ready to go.
